Bell’s palsy is a form of temporary face paralysis that causes one half of your face to droop. This muscle weakness may be caused by a reaction to a viral infection, and usually resolves by itself within six months. However, early treatment with medications and assertive physical therapy is needed to prevent muscles from permanently contracting and to return your face to its full expressive self. One important factor that is often overlooked involves protecting your eye. Bell’s palsy can interrupt the eyelid’s natural blinking ability, leaving the eye exposed to irritation and drying.
